NEW DEMOCRATS STAND WITH CANADIANS OPPOSED TO NORTHERN GATEWAY PIPELINE
December 19th, 2013 - 4:30pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“The Northern Gateway Project puts Canadian jobs and our coastline at risk, and flies in the face of federal commitments to change course and finally honour aboriginal right and title, including for First Nations and Métis who are bearing the brunt of the oil sands sector in Alberta” said Linda Duncan, M.P. for Edmonton-Strathcona and Official Opposition Critic for Western Economic Diversification.
“Conservatives have launched an all-out attack on the British Columbians, First Nations, Metis and environmental groups who testified in good faith to significant economic and environmental impacts and risks from this project,” said Duncan. “For too long, they’ve swept aside concerns. Contrary to what the Federal Government says, Canadians calling for upgrading and refining in Canada to provide jobs are not radicals.”
According to Duncan, as Cabinet begins its decision-making process, it’s imperative for them to make the broader interests of Canadians and in particular of British Columbians a priority. New Democrats will continue to push for a credible assessment process that listens to Canadians and gives consideration to the full environmental, social and economic impacts of projects.
