OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Hélène LeBlanc (LaSalle-Émard) slammed the Conservative government’s decision to eliminate Statistics Canada’s Survey of Labour Income Dynamics.
“The Conservatives have waged a full scale war against independent information. Eliminating this survey rivals the abolishment of the mandatory long form census, which pushed Canada’s chief statistician to resign in protest. This short-sighted decision will deprive economists and researchers of crucial data needed for measuring the well-being and quality of life of Canadians,” said LeBlanc.
This survey on income dynamics gives crucial data about long term trends around issues like poverty and income wealth distribution in our society.
“The Conservative government prides itself on good economic management, but it seems to want to eliminate all data on the economy. Is it scared that Statistics Canada’s data on the labour market will contradict its ideology?” said LeBlanc.
