DUNCAN URGES ACTION TO PREVENT DERAILMENT NEAR LAKE WABAMUN

Edmonton - Responding to concerns raised by fellow Lake Wabamun residents, Linda Duncan MP Edmonton Strathcona has written to the federal Ministers of Fisheries and Transport, Chair of the Transportation Safety Board and the Mayor and Council of Parkland County for urgent action. Complaints were filed with the County and Alberta Environment to investigate a land development adjacent to the CN rail line near Fallis. Following an investigation triggered by a complaint August 1st, Alberta Environment has issued a directive to the developer.

The location is close to the scene of the 2005 derailment and spill of over 500,000 litres of Bunker C and pole oil at lake Wabamun. According to Duncan, “The near half mile long clear cut and land clearing project has been allowed to proceed along a steep grade adjacent to the CN rail line. The rail line runs mere feet from the lake. Significant erosion and movement of soil has already occurred due to heavy summer rains, and may pose a risk to the public roadway and adjacent rail line.”

Duncan has called on the authorities to take preventative action to prevent another disaster.
