Call for Methane Emission Regulations

Letter to Hon. Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change [PDF]

While some measures have been taken to reduce carbon emissions, action has yet to be taken to reduce methane emissions. The federal government has stated they intend to follow in the footsteps of Alberta action to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 40%. The problem is there is yet no full monitor or audit of the total amount of methane being emitted in processing or through fugitive emissions. Numerous analyses indicate the volume is much greater than reported. I have therefore written to the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change joining others in calling on the federal government to issue regulations that require capture now of the 40% but also require a full monitoring and reporting of all sources of methane emissions and an updated regulation issued thereafter based on that true amount.
